Laptitude – The Curious Cases
by Grendel Games
The Curious Cases use the custom Laptitude hardware – laparoscopic instruments that connect to a computer or smartphone to train surgeons in core laparoscopic surgery skills. A series of mini-games build up through an adaptive learning journey to the summit skill- stitching (suturing) and knot tying.
The games set the player on a journey around the world to solve Curious Cases – each of which train specific granular and component skills that match the requirements of the validated Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery test. The games train 2D perception of 3D space, dexterity and manipulation, bimanual dexterity and situational awareness. The games enable players to build up to complex skills by mastering each of the sub-skills.
The games are short (3 minutes), intense with increasing game play requirements as players have their skills tested at a level appropriate to them and are visually completely different to real world surgery or surgical simulation. The analogization of skills to a completely separate environment allows players to focus on the skill. Laptitude is undergoing validation with the Radboud University Medical Centre and data from the first studies show effective skill transfer to physical surgical simulators.
